MINNEAPOLIS - Fall is the optimum time to work on your lawn because temperatures are generally cooler both during the day and at night, but the soil temperatures remain warm so germination of new grass works very well. Overseeding and fall fertilizer are the easy things to do to ensure a better lawn for the rest of this year and for next.
If you are going to tackle some weeds you do need to know what you have. Depending on that after the first frost is a great time to kill perennial weeds as they are storing energy for winter.
Killing annual weeds can be done anytime but remember that with some weed killers you can not grow grass and kill weeds at the same time.
