Grow with KARE: Pet-friendly garden

BLAINE, Minn. - We got an email from Kari in Blaine asking us about a very common problem. She has a puppy (a big one) and a grand daughter. The puppy, especially, has been caught eating just about everything in the garden.

Kari is wondering what's safe and what's toxic to dogs in the garden? You might be surprised at the common plants and flowers on the list. These are NOT good for dogs:

Annuals: Coleus, geranium, begonias

Shrubs: Boxwood, hydrangea, yews

Perennials: Iris and rhubarb

Don't get discouraged! There's an even bigger list of plants that are harmless to dogs. The ASPCA has an extensive list of toxic and non-toxic plants for dogs, cats and even horses so you can be sure your furry friends are safe to roam and chew a little.
