PRIOR LAKE, Minn. - A relaxing night took a precarious turn Thursday on Prior Lake when a boat was consumed by fire, sending its occupants scrambling into the water.
Dispatchers in Scott County received a flurry of calls shortly after 7 p.m. reporting a boat fire on Prior Lake. First responders arrived on the scene to find the runabout, owned by a lake resident, was fully engulfed. They learned that five occupants were able to evacuate the boat and were plucked out of the water by other boaters. Two of the boaters suffered minor burns and were treated on scene by Allina Ambulance.
Prior Lake firefighters battled the blaze both by boat and from the shoreline near the 16200 block of Lakeside Ave SE. They managed to put the fire down before the runabout sank. It was towed to shore, then moved to a salvage yard where the State Fire Marshal will attempt to determine the source of the fire. The boat is considered a total loss.
Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen says the incident serves as a good reminder to boaters to inspect their personal floatation devices and fire extinguishers as emergencies on the water can occur in an instant.
