Overcoming fears of public speaking

A world-class public speaking coach joined us on KARE 11 News at 11am.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Studies suggest one of the most common phobias is the fear of public speaking, affecting up to 75-percent of people between the ages of 9 and 90.

Now, as many of us spend more time communicating via gadgets, kids aren't learning how to speak in public; and in some cases, people are being held back in their career by their inability to communicate effectively in public.

Deirdre Van Nest is a certified world class speaking coach, whose goal is to help people come to terms with this common fear. She shared 4 practical steps to get started during a visit to KARE 11 News at 11am:

1) Fear is normal
2) Have a foolproof opening
3) Tap into your audience's emotions
4) "Winging it" is not a strategy
