Help Uganda refugees through The Shine On Project

The Shine On Project is three-month challenge to see how many people from our community would be willing to purchase a headlamp for a person in Uganda!

EDINA, Minn. - The colorful paper lanterns and large photographs displayed in the Southdale Center main atrium are a part of an Art of Edina initiative called The Shine On Project.

The paper lanterns were created by the entire 4th and 5th-grade classes at Our Lady of Grace (OLG) Catholic School in Edina. There are over 150 installed. The art project was overseen by the OLG Art Specialist Amy Slack.

For each paper lantern that was created, a solar headlamp was donated by our sponsor, Tradition Companies, to the refugees living in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda.

From this Art of Edina installation, a project was born: The Shine On Project.

The Shine On Project is three-month challenge to see how many people from our community would be willing to purchase a headlamp for a person in Uganda!

The majority of people living in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement do not have electricity and use fuel like kerosene in their home to have light. This fuel creates toxic gas, causes burns and is expensive. As you may guess - the headlamps we send can truly change a life!

When you purchase a headlamp for $18 - you will receive a thank you card as well as an “In Your Honor” card. The In Your Honor card states that a headlamp was purchased in someone’s name. You can use that card as a teacher gift, employee gift, etc. It is such a great feeling and a wonderful gift idea to let a friend know that you did something nice in their honor!
