Grow with KARE: Are my seeds still good?

I'm sure many of you have seed packets, still half full, that are begging for you to give them a chance. But are they still good?

I'm sure many of you have seed packets, still half full, that are begging for you to give them a chance. But are they still good? A simple science experiment can answer that.

In a plastic bac or lidded container place a moistened paper towel or coffee filter. On top, scatter 10 seeds. Place in a warm location for up to a week and wait to see how many, if any of the seeds germinate.

In general, if you get 7 of 10 to germinate, the seeds are viable and you can plant them in the ground this Spring. This represents to a 70% germination rate. Any less than 7 and you run the risk of little success in the garden.

Happy garden planning!
