3 arrested in Ham Lake shooting

A 21-year-old Elk River man is improving after being shot in the chest Wednesday night, while prosecutors consider charges against three suspects arrested in the case.

HAM LAKE, Minn. - Three people are in custody after the shooting of a 21-year-old Elk River man outside a Ham Lake convenience store Wednesday night.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Department says a 31-year-old man from Ham Lake, a 20-year-old man from Zimmerman and a 16-year-old woman from Minneapolis were arrested in the incident, which originally left the victim in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable.

All three of the suspects are being held on pending charges of aiding and abetting second degree assault while prosecutors consider what criminal charges are appropriate.

The shooting was initially reported to police in a 911 call as a possible road rage incident shortly before 7:30 p.m. When police responded to the Super America station at Highway 65 and Constance Boulevard they found the victim inside a vehicle, shot in the chest.

Anoka County Sheriff's spokesman Commander Paul Sommer says the shooting was first reported by friends of the victim as stemming from a road rage incident, but it quickly became apparent that story was fabricated. At this point authorities are unsure of the exact circumstances that led to the shooting. A search warrant was served on the vehicle and investigators hope that evidence recovered will shed light on what happened.

The shooting victim is at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. His name has not yet been released.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the shooting or the suspects to call them at 763-427-1212.
