MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota State Patrol says it made hundreds of arrests for drunken driving over the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

The patrol says that from 6 p.m. Friday evening through 4 a.m. Monday, 424 motorists statewide were arrested for driving under the influence. That's despite plenty of urging to use smarter options for getting home, including free bus rides, Metro Transit and Uber.

Authorities say that's a 28 percent increase from last year, during the same time period, when 331 motorists were arrested for DWI.

On an average weekend, state troopers, officers and deputies arrest approximately 285 people.
