Men and sexual health

This week in our Real Men Wear Gowns campaign we're talking about something that isn't always the easiest to dive into - our sexual health.

SAINT LOUIS PARK, Minn. - This week in our Real Men Wear Gowns campaign we're talking about something that isn't always the easiest to dive into - our sexual health.

“People sometimes under-appreciate how important sex is in their lives, all throughout their lives,” says Dr. Michael Butcher, Director of the Sexual Medicine Clinic at HealthPartners.

Dr. Butcher treats a number of conditions that impact men's sexual health. The most common is erectile dysfunction. He says as many as 50-60% of men struggle with it and it can start as early as your 30's.

He says that are several things that can cause it, including conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and diabetes.

According to Dr. Butcher, there's also often a psychological element to it too, but there's help and he says keeping your sex life healthy is about getting back to the basics.

“Anything that's healthy is going to be good, so exercise, eating right, all those things are helpful to prevent not only the diseases that can contribute to erectile dysfunction, but also prevent problems with sex in general,” says Dr. Butcher.

He says they're dedicated to having those sometimes-uncomfortable conversations so that you know there's hope.

“You don't have to give up on your sex life,” he adds. “It's an important part of who you are and how you can express yourself with your partner.”
