Student-led walkout at White Bear Lake

"We're out here today to not only support MSD (Parkland, Florida), but other schools, facilities, other schools that have been affected by things like this that politicians from both sides have just turned a blind eye to," said Anikka Koll, a junior at White Bear Lake.

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. -- High School students walking the snowy streets of White Bear Lake.

"We're out here today to not only support MSD (Parkland, Florida), but other schools, facilities, other schools that have been affected by things like this that politicians from both sides have just turned a blind eye to," said Anikka Koll, a junior at White Bear Lake.

An organized walkout against gun violence to City Hall where hundreds more are already chanting for change. Inside, the Mayor of White Bear Lake - Jo Emerson - is ready to help.

"I want them to understand how government works and that we need to work with our state and federal leaders to make change," said Emerson.

So, when the student leaders arrive they're welcomed inside City Hall where their voices are heard.

"We are sick of waiting for our representatives to take action against gun violence," said McKenzie Brown, a senior at White Bear Lake.

Gun violence that's been threatened across the nation and the state. In St. Francis, classes were canceled today after an "alleged threat." Same for Hill City on Thursday.

And, in Orono, a student has been charged for making a threat that sent the schools into lockdown on Wednesday. Orono Police said, the last couple of days they've added more of a presence at the schools to make sure everyone feels safe.

"This is a perfect example of if you see something, say something. But, also, parents need to talk to their kids. This needs to be a conversation about the consequences of posting things, making a statement," said Correy Farniok, Orono's Chief of Police.

The Orono Police Department has 29 officers. They say, Wednesday, they got help from 8 to 10 neighboring departments, Hennepin County, and the FBI.

"The resources that went into that, from that time frame and the follow up, has a significant cost. We haven't even totaled the cost that this investigation is going to affect the taxpayers," said Farniok.
