Andover celebrates gold medalist Maddie Rooney

Andover's Maddie Rooney, Olympic gold medalist.

ANDOVER, Minn. - Pride permeates at Andover High School after Maddie Rooney's performance in Team USA's gold medal win over Canada.

This is where her passion for the puck started. Today, she is receiving high praise.

"When they won, I started screaming and woke up my parents. They were pretty upset about that. I told them an Andover native won the gold medal. That, to me, is exciting," one Andover student told KARE 11.

"My whole family was jumping up and down. I looked at my phone and got videos from friends of them going crazy,' another student said.

On Thursday, her University of Minnesota-Duluth college jersey was on display. The school announcements celebrated the 2015 graduate and now gold medal winner.

"Maddie is the most driven person I have been around. Someone who showed up, focused every day," said her high school hockey coach Mark Manney.

"When you get a hard-working special person like that, they help you become a better coach. More than you help them become a player. If there was any help on my part, it was maybe just giving her the opportunity. She was going to break down doors whether I was there or not."

Breaking down golden doors that had been locked tight for 20 years.
