4 generations later, family leatherwork still thriving

Inventures: George's Shoe and Leather Repair

ST. PAUL, Minn. – One of the first things you’ll see walking in to George’s Shoe and Leather Repair on Grand Avenue are framed photos of the great grandfather and grandfathers of Dan, Chris and Brian George, who are now fourth generation shoe and leather repairmen.

"It’s almost spine tingling to think about. Grandpa was born in Lebanon and Great Grandpa came to America and started the first shop in 1905," Dan George says.

When their dad retired, the brothers became fourth generation owners after he expanded the business to mending hockey equipment in the 1970’s.

“The sad thing is, other shoe repairs, a lot of people retire and the next generation doesn’t want to pick up the business -- but it’s good for us, fun to keep it going,“ Chris George says.

The brothers say they have been able to be in business so long by keeping it a family business. They also say as the price of shoes and hockey equipment rise, they’re seeing more people turn to repairs.

“The first line our customers usually say is, 'These are my favorites. What can you do?'” Chris George says.
