Homeowners cash in on Ryder Cup

Renting out homes during the Ryder Cup

CHASKA, Minn. – With thousands of fans expected to attend the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, hotel rooms and rentals are in high demand.

A quick search on vacation rental sites like VRBO, Air BnB and even Craigslist, you can find dozens of listings in the Twin Cities during the Ryder Cup.

"When else are you going to get, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 10 grand whatever your house is listed at for someone to stay in your house for a week?" said Sarah Chambers.

She and her husband are renting out their 3,200-square foot home in Chaska at the rate of $5,000 for 7 days during the golf tournament.

Other rates on Craigslist went as high as $25,000 for 7 days for a home a similar size and up to $40,000 on a VRBO site.

"I don't think there is a normal with an event like this. The upcoming Super Bowl will be the same thing only on steroids," said Herb Tousley, director of the Shenehon Center for Real Estate at The University Of St. Thomas.

He says there are few factors that dictate temporary markets such as home rentals for events. It’s largely gauged by what people are willing to pay.

“I think the only thing you can compare to, is what people are paying and getting for properties because the normal rental rates just go out the window," Tousley said.
