2 children rescued from ice heave on Lake Pepin

LAKE CITY, Minn. - Two young children are recovering after they were trapped beneath an ice heave on the frozen shores of Lake Pepin.

Last Friday, the three and four-year-old climbed under the ice heave so their mother could take a picture, and that's when a 10 foot by 5 foot piece of the ice heave broke off, trapping the kids underneath.

A chunk of ice that size can weigh up to 2,800 pounds.

The Lake City fire department used airbags to lift the ice. That allowed rescuers to reach them and pull them to safety.
