PLYMOUTH, Minn -- Sitting quietly near the wall in her economics class, it might be easy to overlook Brooke Evensen. But It's safe to say that whether it's in the classroom or in the pool, this statuesque senior has made quite a splash at Robbinsdale Armstrong.
Number one in a class of 478, Brooke is an academic award winner, a member of the National Honor Society, and the Spanish Honor Society.
"I've had some great teachers and great classes", says Brooke. "I've learned so much in the four years that I've been here so, I really enjoy it."
Playing sax in both the Armstrong marching and symphonic bands, Brooke also recently wrapped-up a six-year career as a captain of the Falcons girls swim team, earning a trip to the state meet and a full-ride scholarship to swim at Iowa State University. Not surprisingly, Brooke finds similarities between her success in the pool and in the classroom.
"Well, being a swimmer has definitely helped me with time management", says Brooke. "Having a 2-hour practice and then going home and having 2-hours to do homework, I can't just sit around. I have to just get down to business, but, it's what swimming is, you just keep going and going, so, that helps me in school".
Brooke says another thing that's helped her in both the pool and in the classroom are the many friendships she's formed at Armstrong, and how she's counting on those friendships to last well after graduation.
"There are definitely some great friendships that I'll keep for the rest of my life, because we have the same values" says Brooke. "We all want to do well, we've gone far, and we just want to do well."
While Brooke is ahead of the game in knowing where she'll attend school in the fall, she says she will go in undecided on a major. Brooke says she knows that she wants to someday work in a capacity where she can help people. And whatever she chooses, the last thing she wants is to be saddled to a desk.
