Friends and family are coming together this weekend to help an 8-year-old Shakopee girl fighting a rare type of cancer.
Abby Olson is expected to be at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis for several months as she undergoes treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The cancer was discovered in September after Abby had a small bump on her head-thought to be a benign cyst-removed. AML usually affects adults over the age of 40 and is rarely seen in children.
Members of the Meadow Springs Church in Shakopee heard about Abby's ordeal and decided to help her family plan an event to raise money for medical expenses. They are hosting a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and raffle on Saturday, December 1 at the Dan Patch American Legion in Savage from 2-8 p.m.
An actor from the television show "Desperate Housewives," James Denton, will be attending the benefit from 5-6 p.m. and will be auctioning off a lunch date. Denton became involved after his wife, Erin O'Brien, who is originally from the Shakopee area, heard about Abby's condition.
Money raised at Saturday's benefit will go toward medical expenses incurred during Abby's treatment. Her father, Marty Olson, is self-employed and has been pulling working overnights so that he can spend time with Abby during the day. A few days prior to the diagnosis, Abby's mother, Trish Stobbs, found out she is losing her job in January.
