LONDON - Palace officials say Prince William and his wife are expecting their first child.

St. James Palace said Monday that the Duchess of Cambridge has a severe form of morning sickness and is currently in a London hospital. A released statement says the Duchess is suffering from a condition known as "Hyperemesis Gravidarum," A very acute morning sickness, which requires supplementary hydration and nutrients.

Despite her sickness their royal highnesses and families are said to be "delighted" with the news.

The palace also says "As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter."

Speculation of a royal baby on board has been floating around since Kate was spotting drinking water, not wine, at a state banquet in Singapore in September.

But even as recently as last week, she was keeping up royal appearances, even playing field hockey with schoolchildren at her former school.

The news of her pregnancy sent Twitter into overdrive. Prime Minister David Cameron wrote that he was "delighted by the news" and said the couple will make "wonderful parents."

The baby, as first-born to William who is second in line for the throne after his dad Prince Charles, could become monarch one day, notes AP. Whether a boy or a girl, the child will be next in line behind William in the line of succession to the throne.
