ST. PAUL, Minn. - Traffic investigators are trying to determine what triggered a fatal accident Monday morning that shut down a busy St. Paul intersection during rush hour.

A St. Paul Police spokesman says the driver, described only as a man in his 50s, was driving north on White Bear Avenue when he veered and crossed the median into oncoming traffic near where White Bear intersects with Montana Avenue.

Witnesses say the car struck a light pole, causing it to flip. The driver was pulled from the vehicle and rushed to Regions Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say at this point there is no indication that drugs or alcohol, or distracted driving were factors in the crash. An autopsy should determine whether a medical situation is to blame.
