COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Law enforcement officers and grateful citizens from across Minnesota and the country have converged on Collegeville to bid farewell to a police officer who died in the line of duty.
Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker was fatally shot Thursday night while checking on a man whose family believed he was suicidal.
Pictures from SKY 11 show a sea of squad cars parked on the campus of St. John's University. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) estimates that 3,200 people are attending Officer Decker's Funeral Service, 2300 of whom are law enforcement professionals from Minnesota, surrounding states and providences.
Following the service a procession will escort his casket through the community he served, and to St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery in Luxemburg, where Decker will be laid to rest.
The man who was named by authorities as the prime suspect in Decker's slaying was released from the Stearns County Jail Tuesday due to what prosecutors say is a lack of evidence.
