MINNEAPOLIS - A 59-year-old substitute teacher faces criminal charges after allegedly abusing students in a Bloomington elementary school classroom.
A criminal complaint says Laura Avery was substituting at Oak Grove Elementary School on December 13 when the alleged abuse took place. Police received reports of her alleged conduct the day after.
Prosecutors say on the day Avery was working as a substitute in a 5th grade classroom three students were found crying in a hallway. They told school personnel that Avery had sworn at them, pulled them by the arm, slapped and pulled their hair.
The students said Avery told them to get into a circle or she would slap them, and added that she was "tired of this $#&*ing crap.
Laura Avery is charged with one gross misdemeanor count of malicious punishment of a child, and one misdemeanor of tampering with a witness for going to one of the alleged victim's home.
