GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Since retailers didn't sell as much as they expected during the Christmas season, we should see some great post-Christmas sales.

But how do you know what to be on the look out for today, and are there any apps that can help?

Carrie Rocha from pocketyourdollars.com visited KARE 11 Sunrise with some tips.

Think beyond Christmas. It's not just lights, tree and holiday décor that will be on sale
Check the new ads.
Make a 2013 gift list. Yes, I'm serious. Now and July are the two major clearance times of year when you can easily get things 50-80% off. Strategically, it's the best time to buy ahead for the gifts you need throughout the year - think Valentine's Day, Easter baskets, Mother's Day, birthdays, anniversaries.
Avoid "spaving". Spaving is overspending in the name of saving money because you're getting such a great deal on things that you can't really afford.
Keep size info handy. Jot down what shoe/boot and winter clothing sizes your kids will be wearing next year on the back of a business card. Keep it handy as you browse the sale racks.

Obvious things:
Christmas décor. Even thrift stores have loads of things at 50-75% off.
Winter clothes. Get next year's boots, coats and snowpants now
Seasonally packaged sundries. Christmas-themed boxes of Kleenex, hand lotion, air fresheners and everything else you might regularly buy will go on deep clearance. These items may be mixed in with regular product on Target and grocery store shelves.
Home furnishings. Look for seasonal items that can be repurposed - red plates work well for Valentine's Day.

Less obvious things:
. The Consumer Electronics Show 2013 happens January 8-11. That means 2012 models become "last year's models" and prices tend to drop.
Fitness gear. It's almost New Year's and fitness gear goes on sale just in time for those who make resolutions.
Storage and organizational items. As people put Christmas stuff away AND make New Year's resolutions to be more organized.
Sheets and bedding. White sales happen in January.

Grills and patio equipment. What you'll soon see in stores are next year's spring models at full price. What's left will be clearance in July.
Suitcases. This is peak travel season. Wait until the summer when everyone's focused on back-to-school

Shop Savvy. Great price compare app. Scan the barcode of an item and see its price at online retailers as well as area bricks & mortar stores.
