HASTINGS, Minn. - A Rosemount man will serve 60 days in jail and 30 days of community service for his role in the hit-and-run death of a deaf woman back in 2009.
Eric James Hunter, age 44, was sentenced in the death of Joan LeVasseur of Apple Valley. LeVasseur was crossing the intersection of Cedar Avenue and 153rd Street in Apple Valley the night of March 6, 2009 when Hunter struck her and drove away. She eventually died from her injuries.
A tip led investigators to Hunter on March 11. While prosecutors considered charging him with criminal vehicular homicide, they eventually determined that Levasseur was crossing the street against a red light in the dark when she was hit.
In October of 2010 a Dakota County judge declared a retrial after a jury couldn't reach a verdict on lesser charges. At his retrial date Hunter plead guilty to one count of leaving the scene of an accident Involving death, which is a felony.
If he fails to adhere to the terms of his probation Eric Hunter could serve 13 months in prison.
