ANOKA, Minn. - A 23-year-old man is in jail and facing criminal charges in connection with a strong-arm robbery at a Coon Rapids jewelry store in late December.
The Anoka County Sheriff's Department credits clear surveillance photos and tips from the public for leading them to the suspect, a man with an extensive criminal history and no permanent address.
Authorities say the suspect walked into Kay Jewelers at Riverdale mall on December 30, asked a sales associate to show him an engagement ring, and then reached over and pulled it from her finger, breaking it in the process. The value of the ring was estimated at $16,000.
Surveillance video and still photos triggered a number of tips, which led authorities to arrest the man January 8. He was positively identified by the sales associate he robbed and several other witnesses. Clothing worn by the robber was also recovered from the suspect.
The suspect has what the sheriff's department deems an extensive number of incidents with law enforcement, including multiple arrests for theft-related crimes.
He is currently being held in the Anoka County Jail awaiting charges.
