BEMIDJI, Minn. - Freezing rain is coating roads in northern Minnesota with a thick layer of ice. The Minnesota State Patrol closed westbound Interstate 94 from Alexandria to Fergus Falls yesterday for a couple of hours.

I-94 from Alexandria to Fergus Falls is now open again.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for parts of northern Minnesota, including Cass, Beltrami and Koochiching counties. Slick travel conditions caused some school districts to cancel or delay classes Friday.

The Duluth News Tribune says Duluth, Ely, Hibbing and Chisholm schools are among those closed.

MnDOT is advising no travel on Highways 113 and 108 near Waubun and Pelican Rapids because of icy conditions.

National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Krause says temperatures are dropping rapidly in western Minnesota as the cold front moves in.

Freezing rain is expected to end later Friday with snow developing. Forecasters expect 3 to 7 inches of snow for northern St. Louis, northern Itasca and Koochiching counties.
