Hastings man jumps off courthouse balcony to avoid urine test

HASTINGS, Minn. - Authorities say a 22-year-old Hastings man leapt off a balcony inside the Dakota County Courthouse to avoid taking a urine test.

Dakota County Chief Deputy Tim Leslie tells KARE 11 the defendant ran away from a deputy, jumped off the second-floor balcony and landed on his face Wednesday.

The man had pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor theft. The judge had ordered the man to take the urine test for drug or alcohol use.

After a deputy took the man upstairs for testing, he ran away and jumped off the balcony. He landed on the first floor in a children's play area. It was empty and no one else was hurt.

The man was taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening injuries.
