BAYFIELD, Wis. -- A Wisconsin man died Saturday afternoon after his snowmobile broke through the ice on Lake Superior.

The Coast Guard says the accident happened near Madeline Island in Bayfield.  Authorities have identified the victim as 34-year-old James Hudson of Bayfield.

A witness attempted to rescue Hudson but kept falling through the ice himself.  Officials say the victim was in the 33 degree water for 45 minutes before rescue crews were able to reach him.

Hudson was taken to Memorial Hospital in Ashland where he was pronounced dead.
