ST. CLOUD, Minn. - An altercation between two men following bar closing escalated into a melee that involved a police officer in St. Cloud early Sunday.
A St. Cloud police officer spotted two men involved in a fight outside McRudy's Bar on St. Germain Street just before 2:15 a.m. After announcing he was a police officer he tried to separate the men, only to become involved himself.
After separating the men one of the suspects, now identified as 22-year-old Glen Matthews of St. Cloud, grabbed the officer's jacket and pulled him to the ground. A crowd of between 30 and 40 people surrounded the two and began grabbing at the officer's coat and interfering with the arrest.
Other officers soon arrived on the scene and used pepper spray to help disperse the crowd.
Matthews was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing legal process, while 22-year-old Jeffrey Fitzgerald Bias II was charged with disorderly conduct.
Both were taken to the Stearns County Jail.
The officer did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
