HOPKINS, Minn. -- If these dogs could talk, the story they'd tell would break your heart.

The Akita brothers, 12-year-old Hercules and 10-year-old Patches were left all alone in an Isanti house going into foreclosure for five weeks without food or water or a way out until an angel came by.

"You can never be surprised what you come across, but it's the first time I've ever come across dogs," housing worker Michael Davis said of discovering the dogs when he went to secure the home for the bank.

In the housing crisis people would leave behind almost anything, but this was too much.

"I could see the dogs were basically skin and bone," Davis said.

Michael fed them that day and every other day until last week when the bank said the house had to sell and the dogs had to go. So Davis, found two more angels in waiting.

"The bank wanted them out and this was like 2 p.m. We said, 'Whoa, let's get 'em,'" Secondhand Hounds worker Emily Randolph said.

Emily and Rachel over at Secondhand Hounds rescue took them in five days ago, cleaned them up and gave them all the meds they needed.

Both of the boys have ear infections, bladder infections and some wobbly hips. Hercules teeth are rotting out.

But thanks to Secondhand Hounds, they also have a second chance at their golden years.

Patches is always there to guide his older brother. Hercules is 95 percent blind.

For anyone looking for dogs to love, this isn't a pair to miss.

"This is maybe not a cute puppy that someone wants for Christmas, but they are more deserving than any other dog I've ever seen," Secondhand Hounds director Rachel Mairose said.

We will never know why Hercules and Patches owners just up and left them for dead, but we do know why Davis didn't.

"I couldn't sleep at night. I felt bad. The main reason is because my mother said if I call the pound and didn't do something she would never talk to me again, not a very good Thanksgiving if I did that," Davis said.

That makes it four angels, adding Davis's mom to the list.
