MINNEAPOLIS - Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against an Edina man accused of crashing into two State Patrol cruisers while drunk.
Maurice Leshane Blevins is charged with criminal vehicular operation and third degree DWI after the incident, which occured just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, January 26.
Troopers had secured the scene of a rollover crash at I-494 and the ramp to I-35W, using flares and their lights to block off the scene. Investigators say as a tow truck was attempting to remove the vehicle from the scene Blevins crashed into the patrol squad cars.
Inside Blevins' car was a 20-year-old passenger and three children, ages 14, 11 and seven. None were in booster seats, but all were wearing seat belts.
Two of the children were taken to the hospital to be checked out, as was a trooper who suffered neck, chest and back injuries.
Troopers say Blevins smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot and watery eyes, had slurred speech and lacked balance. An initial blood test showed his blood alcohol content at .166, twice the legal limit.
It was then learned that Blevins' license had been revoked back in 1994 when he refused a breath test and was charged with DWI.
