MINNEAPOLIS - A teenager was sentenced to 28 years in prison Tuesday in the shooting death of a Minneapolis boy.

Stephon Shannon, 17, entered a guilty plea to a charge of second degree murder for the benefit of a gang last week for killing Nizzel George. The 5-year-old boy was sleeping on his grandmother's couch on June 26, 2012 when Shannon opened fire outside the north Minneapolis home.

Shannon later told police he wanted revenge for a shooting that happened the night before.

In court Tuesday Shannon gave a short apology before being led away in handcuffs.

"I'm sorry for my actions. There is nothing I can do to change what I've done."

Security was heavy inside the courtroom due to tension between the families of the victim and his killer during previous hearings. Eight Hennepin County sheriff's deputies were deployed to keep things under control, and the two families sat on opposite sides of the courtroom.

An unnamed 15-year-old has also been charged. Prosecutors are fighting to try him as an adult.
