MIAMI - It was her attitude that first ticked off a Miami-Dade County judge. But it was what a drug suspect did next that got her tossed in the pokey for a cool 30 days.
Penelope Soto appeared in court Monday accused of possessing illegal drugs, and from the get-go things did not go well. Soto, appearing via video link, first greeted Miami-Dade County Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat with an informal "what's up?" She then laughed at the judge when he asked how much her jewelry was worth to determine if she could pay for an attorney.
JUDGE: How much would you say your jewelry's worth?
JUDGE: It's not a joke, you know, we're not in a club now.
SOTO: Okay, but if you know kind of...
JUDGE: We are not in a club, be serious about it.
SOTO: I'm serious about it, you just made me laugh.
JUDGE: I can see you're serious about it.
When they were done discussing her bond, Soto hit the judge with a sarcastic "adios" before walking off camera. He called her back, and then doubled her bond to $10,000.
JUDGE: Count 1 will be 10,000.
SOTO: (shocked) Are you serious?
JUDGE: I am serious. Adios!
JUDGE: Come back again.
The video hookup captures Soto flipping the judge off, and then shouting the F-bomb at him. The conversation that followed did not bode well for Ms. Soto.
JUDGE: I believe I heard you saying to...
SOTO: Yes I did. I'm not going to the...
JUDGE: I believe you... Did you say (BLEEP)?
SOTO: Actually I did...
JUDGE: Did you say that?
SOTO: Yes sir, I did.
JUDGE: Oh you did say that? I find you in direct criminal contempt. 30 days in the county jail.
SOTO: Okay, that's fine.
