ANOKA, Minn. - An Anoka woman will serve a 4 year prison sentence for her role in the death of her three-year-old son.
Elizabeth Ann Moorman, 41, Anoka, was sentenced after pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter and neglect of a child. The sentence is in line with Minnesota sentencing guidelines.
Moorman brought the child to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids in August of 2011, where an examination found that he had suffered a right cerebral hemorrhage, two collapsed lungs and retinal hemorrhaging. He was immediately airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center. Prosecutors alleged that these injuries were the result of severe child abuse inflicted upon the boy.
The boy died on September 3 as a result of the injuries he suffered.
Moorman's boyfriend, 26-year-old Anthony William Urban, pled guilty to second degree murder of this three year old and was sentenced to 190 months in prison in August 2012. Prosecutors say Moorman delayed treatment for her son despite knowing that he desperately needed immediate medical attention.
"Both Mr. Urban and Ms. Moorman had a role in the unnecessary death of this child, and we felt charges against both parties were required," said Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo in s prepared statement.
"While we are satisfied that Ms. Moorman is being held accountable for her role in her son's death, we need to remember that an innocent child lost his life at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect him," reasoned Palumbo.
