GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - A winter storm watch is out for much of central and northern Minnesota and it barely includes the Twin Cities metro area. Blizzard watches are posted for western Minnesota into South Dakota.
The watch comes in advance of a powerful winter storm moving across the Rockies Friday. The system will move out of the mountains, developing rapidly overnight Friday night into Saturday. The Twin Cities will be on the edge of rather warm air and air cold enough to produce mainly snow in central and western and northern Minnesota.
Areas of west central Minnesota could see up to a foot or more of snowfall through early Monday. In the Twin Cities we'll see a mixture of rain/sleet/freezing rain late Saturday night into early Sunday and then occasional rain/sleet/and even wet snow Sunday changing to all snow Sunday night into early Monday.
Forecasting snow totals in the metro, therefor become a headache. Southeastern suburbs may see just mainly rain/sleet with little or no accumulation and northwestern suburbs could see as much as 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. Stay tuned as this dynamic storm system continues to develop over the next 24 hours.
