Oakdale shooter to face 2nd-degree murder charge

OAKDALE, Minn. -- The Oakdale Police Department said that they responded to "shots fired" in the 6900 block of 7th St. North at about 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Responding officers determined that 9-year-old Devin Aryal was struck by multiple gun shots while riding in a passing vehicle with his mother. Devin was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital shortly after his arrival. His mother Melissa Aryal was also shot and was treated and released, police said.

Another victim, 68-year-old Karen Knoblach, of Oakdale, was traveling in a separate vehicle and was also injured by gun fire. She has undergone surgery after being shot multiple times. She is in good condition at Regions Hospital.

The suspect is accused of randomly shooting at of four vehicles.

The suspected shooter fled the immediate area, but was later taken into custody without incident by Washington County Deputies near 4th and Hale Avenue. Police said a handgun was recovered at the arrest scene and the shooter had more rounds of ammunition on him. 

The 34-year-old Oakdale man is being held in the Washington County Jail in Stillwater. He faces charges of second-degree murder and felony assault.

Investigators said they have no reason to believe that additional suspects are at large or that the suspect knew any of his victims.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the on-going investigation.
