OAKDALE, Minn. -- A 9-year-old boy in Oakdale was shot and killed and police say the man who pulled the trigger was shooting at random vehicles.
The suspect was arrested shortly after he fired at multiple vehicles in a quiet neighborhood of the St. Paul suburb on Monday night.
"We can tell you that multiple rounds were fired at four different vehicles and we can also tell you that the suspect had other ammunition with him when he was taken into custody," Oakdale Police Chief Bill Sullivan said.
"It's a sad commentary on our society as a whole," Oakdale Mayor Carmen Sarrack said at the same news conference.
The 34-year-old gunman is in the Washington County Jail awaiting second-degree murder charges.
Police say the boy's mother was hit by gunfire, but was treated and released from the hospital.
A 68-year-old woman, who was also driving in the area, is in good condition after going through successful surgery at Regions Hospital.
Cheryl Russell, who lives near the shooting scene and the suspect's home, said she saw him walking down the street before shots were fired.
"And then I immediately started hearing pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, so he started shooting at the corner here. Then I saw him start shooting again at the corner there. That's when he started shooting at cars on Hadley. I could see the flash come out of the gun and he was clearly shooting at cars," Russell recalled.
Derek Lowen saw the suspect from his front window.
"He didn't run. He walked slowly. He was actually almost calm. It was kind of scary how calm he was," the witnessed told KARE 11 and police. "There were at least 20 casings on the ground in front of my driveway."
Police say the suspect was arrested about a half a mile away without incident. The incident that preceded his arrest has clearly shaken the neighborhood.
"It's a lot of what ifs and when I heard the little boy was shot and killed, I lost it. I just feel so bad," Russell concluded.
