OAKDALE, Minn. - Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 9-year-old boy killed in senseless random shooting in Oakdale on Monday night.
Devin Aryal was a fourth grader at Oakdale Elementary School.
His mother, Melissa Aryal, was also wounded in the shooting.
"Just like any other day, I picked up my kid from daycare, drove home and then both of us got shot," Melissa Aryal said.
Melissa drove into a grocery store parking lot and screamed for help as she cradled her son and said "I love you."
She waited for paramedics to arrive. Devin later died at Regions Hospital.
"I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I still feel like he could come walking through that door at any moment so it's really hard."
The school released a statement Tuesday morning.
"We are deeply saddened that this horrific tragedy took the life of one of our Oakdale Elementary fourth graders. Our hearts go out to the family and the entire Oakdale community. We will have extra staff members on hand to offer support to students who need to speak with a caring adult. Our building and district social worker, school counselors and school psychologists will be available to meet with any of our students who need to talk through the situation. "
The 34-year-old man is being held in the Washington County Jail. He faces charges of second degree murder and second degree assault. Police say they are confident he acted alone, but at this point have not commented on a potential motive.
