WASHINGTON, D.C. - It is something that has never been seen before, three female senators from our part of the country.

Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar, North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp and Wisconsin's Tammy Baldwin are among the 20 women serving as U.S. Senators. That's an all-time record.

"For me, I love being that there are now 20 women in the Senate. I don't think we should be satisfied until there is parity," Heitkamp said. "Because I think it's so important that we draw on the talents of every person who could contribute."

Heitkamp is the first woman elected to Congress from North Dakota. Baldwin is the first woman elected to Congress from Wisconsin. She is also the first openly gay person to be elected to the Senate.

"We have better governance when our legislative bodies look like America," Baldwin said. "This is one step in the right direction but as Heidi mentioned we have a long way to go."

Klobuchar is the first woman elected to the Senate from Minnesota and she is now serving her second term. She called it amazing to see this many women in the Senate.

"It's energizing especially to have them from your neighboring states because it's been not a lot of women from the Upper Midwest and that has now changed," Klobuchar said.

Some are referring to it as the "The Year of the Woman" in Washington.

All three are Democrats, but conversations that have started are not just about the politics.

"Because of our life experiences, we look at these experiences. We look at these things differently, and so it's going to change the agenda," Heitkamp said.

But again, it's not about just the politics. It's also about the style of how to govern, according to Klobuchar.

"We may not agree on everything but that's not the key," Klobuchar said. "The key is, are we willing to stand next to each other and try to find a compromise?"
