STILLWATER, Minn. - Bail has been set at $2M for a man charged with second degree murder in the random shooting death of a 9-year-old.
Nhan Lap Tran of Oakdale appeared in Washington County Court Wednesday morning where he was officially charged with six felony counts, including murder, attempted murder and assault in a shooting rampage that left Devyn Aryal dead and two adults injured.
Devin Aryal was fatally shot Monday night and killed while riding in a minivan with his mother near 7th and Hadley in Oakdale Monday night. His mother was also shot in the arm, but survived.
Another victim, 68-year old Karen Knoblach, was shot while in her car. She was in good condition at Regions Hospital Tuesday night. Three grandchildren who were in her van at the time were not injured.
Police later identified two additional motorists whose vehicles had been hit with bullets.
Witnesses say Tran, age 34, randomly opened fire on a number of vehicles while walking down the street. Prosecutors say he tossed a 9mm handgun when officers approached him, and was also carrying two clips filled with ammunition and other ammo in a backpack and a fannypack.
Investigators say Tran admitted to shooting at least two cars during questioning.
Tran stood silently during Wednesday's court appearance, looking up only when the judge addressed him. The suspect's defense attorney asked for a mental health exam, something prosecutors agreed with. Bail was then set at $2 million.
The death of Devyn Aryal has hit the community of Oakdale hard. Hundreds gathered at a church not far from the fatal shooting scene Tuesday night to grieve and gather strength from each other.
