BAYPORT, Minn. - A 22-year-old man who fell through the ice on the St. Croix River while snowmobiling has died.
The incident happened around 12 p.m. Saturday near Point Road in Bayport.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and found the man unresponsive in the water. They estimated he had been in the water for almost 20 minutes.
"He was just driving and went into the river. That area of the river is open and unsafe," said Chief Deputy Dan Starry of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Officials say the man was traveling between the shoreline and open water near the Allen King generating station run by Xcel. Officials believe the man went past several "thin ice" warning signs before going through the ice.
"Especially in this area, there's a lot of underflow and warm water that's coming in and there are a lot of areas that are unsafe and have open water," said Starry.
The man was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Officer and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are conducting the investigation.
The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
