MINNEAPOLIS - Freezing temperatures and residential buildings near the scene led firefighters to raise the level of an industrial fire to two alarms in Minneapolis Tuesday morning.

Crews were called to Northern Metal at 1803 2nd Street North at 1:10 a.m. When they got there, they found heavy smoke and fire showing from the building.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

Crews started an interior attack, but were forced to exit the building as the fire grew rapidly.

An adjacent apartment building was evacuated for a short time as a precaution, but the fire did not spread to any other building.

A second alarm was eventually called on the fire because of the close proximity of the apartments and the need for additional firefighters due to cold temperatures and sub-zero windchills.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
