ST. PAUL, Minn. - Most wrestlers will tell you that getting stuck at the Minnesota State High School Wrestling tournament is their worst nightmare.
Stuck... as in pinned, in front of a sellout Xcel Energy Center crowd.
But the wrestling team from Kasson-Mantorville took things to a different level Thursday, literally getting stuck in their hotel elevator.
Writer John Millea chronicled the drama on the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) website, reporting that 14 members of the Kasson-Mantorville team got stuck somewhere near the 6th floor of the Doubletree hotel.
The grapplers were stuck in the elevator for an hour and a half, Millea reports, before 285-pounder Sam Stoll opened the door with his bare hands, and his belly, according to a teammate.
Even more amazing: This drama took place just before the team was to take on Simley High School for the Class 2A team title. They were freed at 6:35 p.m., just 25 minutes before the match was to begin.
Kasson-Mantorville regrouped from the ordeal, and went on to win 30-27.
