ST. PAUL, Minn. - Upon the announcement of a new Pope Wednesday, the campus of St. Thomas erupted in cheers.
"The Holy Spirit does what he wants and this is obviously the will of God so we're really happy," said seminary student Taylor Leffler.
Leffler was one of about a hundred seminary students who began chanting and waving Vatican flags as they marched across the St. Thomas campus.
Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio will now be known as Pope Francis I.
"He chose Francis, a new name," pointed out Father Michael Becker. "From all signs so far he looks like a humble man, a prayerful man."
As the seminar students chanted, some classes at St. Thomas were released early so students could watch news coverage of the new Pope and reflect on what this selection, an Argentinean Pope, means for the church.
"They are trying to broaden their horizons and get everyone connected and united. That's what I think it means," said student Kelly Brenny.
