SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A man and a woman are presumed drowned after they were dragged away by a fast-moving, icy river in Sioux Falls as they tried to save a 6-year-old child.
Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras says emergency crews searching the Big Sioux River at Falls Park changed their focus from rescue to recovery early Friday.
Sideras says the woman, just identified as the boy's sister, was swept away by the frothing water as she tried to save the child Thursday evening. The man jumped in to help and also disappeared. The boy emerged a short time later. He is with family and will recover fully.
Authorities are using a backhoe Friday morning to break off large chunks of ice, and then stacking them to dam up the river to make the search for the victims more safe.
