SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Crews have recovered the body of a teenager who drowned in Sioux Falls after trying to save her 6-year-old brother from an icy river.

Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras says 16-year-old Madison Leigh Wallace's body was found Friday afternoon.

Wallace jumped into the Big Sioux River at Falls Park on Thursday night after her 6-year-old brother Garrett either fell into the frothing water or became obscured by the gathering foam. Sideras has said Garrett Wallace somehow made it back to shore and was not injured.

The body of a Sioux Falls man who jumped in to help, 28-year-old Lyle Francis Eagletail, has not been recovered.

Specialized crews trained in swift water and cold water diving have been searching the area. It has been a challenge, they say, with the cold weather, ice and foam making it a difficult search.

As of Friday morning, the search runs from the Overlook Café bridge to about 300-500 feet down the river near Falls Park Drive. Sideras says Eagletail went into the river near Overlook Café area and is believed to be somewhere between the bridge and dam.

"Brave and noble thing for these people to not think of their own safety. It makes the operation more dangerous, more complex. If someone falls in, stay on the shore, make continued contact with that person, so crews can have a better handle on saving someone. We don't have that very often," Chief Sideras said.
