ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A Twin Cities family is executing a plan in hopes of bringing more than just a little love into the life of a very sick little girl.
"I think the whole embodiment of June is love, unconditional love," said Adam Rudd, father to June.
June Rudd is three and half years old, but her life, sadly, is measured in days rather than years.
Thirty seven days, that is how long June has been in the hospital. This time she is suffering from complications of a rare disease known as Aicardi Syndrome.
"They told us, 'You know you will be lucky if she makes it to one. She's never going to talk. She's never going to walk, and she's never going to do anything on her own,'" Kati Rudd, June's mother said.
But that wasn't entirely true.
While what June can't do is almost everything, she can do what counts. She does live her little life to its brink, and she has said the one thing that matters.
"They say, 'She's never going to say anything,' and yeah, Adam and I have been lucky enough to hear 'I love you,' once from her," Kati said.
And now, June would like to hear it back from everyone. June's parents put out a call for love in the form of 4 by 4 inch handmade hearts.
Nearly 100 came in on Wednesday, all to adorn the walls of June's room at Children's Hospital. It's the kind of medicine she needs.
"A way to not only share June with the world, but the world with June," Kati said.
Every single one of these hearts, June will see and she will touch. She will know, in her own way that people took the time to give her the little pieces of love that make up every precious day of her life.
"Regardless of time and of what happens with June, we are always going to have her surrounded by love," Kati said.
If you would like to send a heart to June here is what to do. Make it 4 by 4 inches on any kind of paper and decorate it as you wish. Make sure to sign it and say where you are from. Send the hearts to June Rudd, P.O. Box 992, Anoka, MN 55303.
The family's goal is to hang 20,000 hearts by June 1.
