ST. PAUL, Minn. - Things will be a bit quieter around the Governor's Mansion in St. Paul, with the passing of Governor Mark Dayton's beloved dog Mesabi.

Dayton announced on his Facebook page that the German Shepherd died unexpectedly Thursday, just days after surgery to remove his spleen and a cancerous tumor.

"Mesabi was a terrific dog," Dayton posted. "Everyone who knew him, adored him. He loved to sit in the front yard and quietly watch people walk by on Summit Avenue. The silence was shattered, however, when another dog had the temerity to trespass on Mesabi's sidewalk. (He was always a little fuzzy about property rights!)"

The dog passed away two weeks shy of his eleventh birthday.

Dayton has two other German Shepherds, Wanamingo and Itasca.
