BEMIDJI, Minn. - One man is dead and two others hospitalized with life threatening injuries after a violent brawl near Bemidji Thursday night.
The Beltrami County Sheriff says deputies were called around 6:30 p.m. to a residence located in the 1300 block of Quill Ln SE, Ten Lakes Township on reports of a fight involving a numbers of individuals.
Responding deputies and Leech Lake Tribal Police officers found a large group of extremely intoxicated individuals who were bleeding and in various states of distress. Emergency efforts were undertaken in an attempt to revive 44-year-old Leslie Headbird but he was beaten so severely that he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Cass Lake Hospital.
Two other victims, a male and female were also taken to the hospital with possible life threatening injuries.
A short time later, a 18-year-old suspect from Cass Lake was identified and arrested after he stopped a vehicle on the street and attempted to carjack the driver. He was taken to the Cass Lake IHS Hospital and later transferring to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.
Deputies arrested a second suspect, a 29-year-old Cass Lake man. Both suspects are being held in the Beltrami County Jail for 2nd degree murder and assault.
