MAPLEWOOD, Minn. - More than 100 people searched for the body of Kira Trevino on Saturday, the missing Saint Paul woman who was last seen alive four weeks ago and is presumed dead.
Kira's husband Jeffery D. Trevino has been charged with her murder.
The volunteers scoured Keller Lake Regional Park in Maplewood on Saturday, which is less than two miles away from the Trevino home.
Most didn't know her.
Joanne Gruber said, "We just wanted to come out and help. We don't know the family at all."
Joan Stumpf said, "I'm out here because I just want to help the family."
But there is new hope in this third week of volunteer-led searches.
Search coordinator Jodie Leko said, "Were looking for evidence we're looking for some kind of weapon were looking for any kind of evidence."
Keller Regional Park is where some evidence was found last week, a plastic bag with a bloody pillow, sports bra and shirt. The DNA is a match to Kira.
Leko said, "The new developments made us feel like we weren't trying to find the needle in the haystack."
Divers also searched Keller Lake last Tuesday after a woman told police she saw two men in the overnight hours of February 22nd carrying something the size of a body out onto the ice.
Cadaver dogs also detected the scent of a body but divers ultimately found nothing.
Kira's mother Marcie Steger, told KARE by phone Saturday that Kira's father, Jay Steger participated in the search of Keller Regional Park on Saturday with one of Kira's sisters but they chose to keep a low profile.
Marcie Steger sent this message to Leko thanking all the volunteers:
"My name is Felicia and I am Kira's youngest sister. I just wanted to share with all of those who are seareching for my sister, a little about who she was as a person. Kira was a truly wonderful and genuine person. She was genuine in everything she did. A few months ago she shared a poster she had seen and I think it shows exactly how she lived. I would like to share just a little bit of that with you all. 'This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often. If you don't like something, change it... Open your mind, arms, and heart to new things and people, we are united in our differences... Travel often... Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them so go out and start creating. Life is short.'
"I hope this helps everyone get a sense of who she was and I know her spirit will help guide you and give you the strength to keep going.
"We appreciate every single person who is helping search for our beloved sister, daughter and friend. Although our Mom, our brother Austin and I don't believe we will ever truly be able to say just how much we appreciate your help, our whole family would like to say thank you."
Because it's possible the bag with Kira's clothing could have been thrown from a car window, volunteers continue to search other nearby parks and lakes.
About 20 volunteers searched Beaver Lake Regional Park in Saint Paul on Saturday afternoon.
But there have been no reports of any new evidence being found.
The volunteers will continue to search at various locations on Sunday.
