NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Minnesotans are crazed for cupcakes. When KARE 11 asked its Facebook users to list their favorite shops for Easter treats, cupcake bakeries dominated the submissions.
The baker most listed was CakeWalk in downtown Northfield.
Owners Teara Myers and Jody Breathwaite opened CakeWalk just six months ago and have already developed a large following of loyal customers. "Not many people can say they're living their dream, but we can," said Myers.
The friends starting talking about a shop of their own ten years ago while working side-by-side making pastries at Byerly's in Burnsville.
With help from family they launched their business in Northfield, with a quaint downtown that seemed like a good fit.
"I've been baking since I was a kid and this is always something that I've wanted," said Breathwaite.
Their business plan called for sales of 60 cupcakes a day and assorted other pastries. On a typical weekday they are now selling closer to 350 cupcakes, with bigger sales on weekends.
