MINNEAPOLIS - A 27-year-old man is charged with felony hit-and-run and driving while impaired in connection with an incident that claimed the life of a bicyclist.
A criminal complaint issued Tuesday says Joan Ricardo Hernandez-Campoceco admitted to drinking at El Nuevo Rodeo Restaurant the night of March 30, and told investigators he knew he had struck someone on a bicycle at the intersection of Cedar and Lake Street just after 2:15 a.m.
Hernandez-Campoceco reportedly told detectives he drank six beers, but said it wasn't his fault because he had a green light.
Elyse Stern, age 28, was killed when she was struck by a vehicle when riding her bicycle. Officers responding to the scene saw a green Chevy Monte Carlo with heavy front end damage driving away from the intersection. The car was pulled over and police arrested Hernandez-Campoceco.
Officers on the scene described him as extremely intoxicated.
